Thirteen Ways To Use Baking Soda in Cooking

Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate or bicarbonate of soda, has a greatBaking Soda So Many Uses! many uses. It is an inexpensive household cleaner, it is good in cooking, and can even be used in a first aid kit. Over the next 16 Thursdays, I am going to share with you a great many uses for baking soda.

Thirteen Ways to Use Baking Soda in Cooking

  • Make your own self-rising flour

3-1/2 cups flour
1-3/4 teaspoons baking powder
1-3/4 teaspoons baking soda

1-3/4 teaspoons salt

  • Make a fluffy omelet by adding 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda for every 3 eggs
  • Add a pinch of baking soda to buttermilk (instead of whole milk) to make waffles light and soft
  • When making potato pancakes, add 1 teaspoon of baking powder to help cure any indigestion problems for people who can’t tolerate fried foods
  • When cooking cabbage, make sure it turns out tender and not overcooked, cook it in water with a pinch of baking soda
  • Baked beans give you unwanted side affects? Try adding a dash of baking soda when cooking them
  • To cut the acidity of tomatoes, add a pinch of baking soda to tomato-based spaghetti sauce or chili
  • Did you add too much vinegar to a recipe? Just add a pinch of baking soda!
  • Do you drink tea? Get more from your tea bags by adding a pinch of baking soda to the teapot
  • Create your own fizzy drink! Add 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda to an 8 ounce glass of orange juice, grapefruit juice or lemonade and stir well
  • Out of sugar? Try this - 2/3 cup of honey for each cup of sugar + 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda for each cup of honey. Reduce the liquid in the recipe by 1/4 cup, and bake 25 degrees lower than the original temperature
  • Like fluffy mashed potatoes? Add a pinch of baking soda to your potatoes while mashing
  • Like to keep your cauliflower snowy white? Add 1 teaspoon of baking soda to the water while cooking

    I’ve also read that if you add baking soda to your sheep and goats’ drinking water they will have more boy babies. (You add apple cider vinegar if you want girl babies— I got 8 females and 2 males the year I did that.)

    I’m going to be making a sweet potato souffle for Easter. I’m going to try them extra fluffy by adding baking soda…thanks for the tips!
