Earth Hour - Give Back A Little
What will you be doing Saturday night at 8:30 p.m.? Will you be chatting on your cell phone, surfing the internet, watching a movie, or maybe playing the Wii?
People around the globe will be doing something a little
different. At 8:30 p.m. in each person’s time zone, people will be turning all of their lights off. Some will also be unplugging and turning off any non-essential electronic equipment such as cell phones, televisions and computers.
This turning off of lights and other electronic equipment is called “The Earth Hour ” and was organized by the World Wildlife Fund. It has the goal of having 1 billion participants this year.
If you live in Paris, France you will see the Eiffel Tower’s lights turned off for one hour. Or, if you live in New York City, you can expect to see the Empire State Building’s lights to go off for the hour.
So, who’s with me? Get out your candles and your flashlights. If you have a fireplace, maybe this would be a great time to sit by a warm fire and roast some marshmallows. Let’s all join in and give a little back to our planet. One hour may not be significant for one person, but for every person who participates, it can become exponentially huge.

You know, there really is something neat about going w/o electricity for a little while. It forces you to actually relate to real live people around you, not the T.V. or internet. One time my son had a sleepover and the power went off. They had been playing his new WII and having a lot of fun. When the power went off I thought they would be bored and the sleepover would be ruined. Boy was I wrong! They had so much fun gathering flashlights and telling camping stories. One boy said it was the best sleepover ever!
We will definitely participate again this year, although I feel a bit guilty that I wasn’t as involved in promoting it as I was last year.
good luck on your GRE!!!!
Just make sure you remember BEDMAS
Trying to tie up some loose ends as we near the end of EC dropping, please swing by.
Thanks
Sandy
I was in Banff, Canada where they take this Earth Day activity more seriously than I have observed in USA. They built a bon-fire on Lake Louise, served hot chocolate and invited people to ride the horse-driven sleigh. It was awesome.
@caregivingdaughter - It sure can be fun having no electricity for a short while while in the company of others, or even on your own. Maybe even get a chance to see some stars out in the sky.
@ flit - Thanks! My GRE is done, and I did okay on it - enough to at least get in to the program I want. Now on to the application!
@Sandy - OK, swung by.
@lynnrd - Sounds like where you were they really knew how to celebrate earth hour. How fun, a sleigh ride!
