Save Money on Entertainment With A Potluck!
Take a moment to think about this. You want to get together with friends or family members. More often than not, that means that food will be involved.
You can either have everyone meet at a restaurant, where each person will end up spending at least $10. Or, you can go with a different option - a potluck!
If you grew up in a church environment, then you probably know what a potluck is. Even if you didn’t, you might know. In case you don’t though, I will explain.
Potluck:
- a gathering of people, either individuals or groups or a combination
- each individual or group brings a food item within a pre-set course (appetizer, entree, desert, drink)
- all foods are set out buffet style
How To Set Up a Potluck:
- The Host or Hostess decides on a theme and or type of cuisine (vegetarian, Indian, Italian, Hispanic, Thai, etc.)
- The Host or Hostess after discussing it with those who may be attending, chooses a time and place
- The Host or Hostess assigns a course to each individual or group, being careful to keep it balanced (in other words, you don’t want 1 person bringing an appetizer, and 10 people bringing a dessert - unless you decide to have a dessert theme!)
- Usually, the Host or Hostess provides paper plates, plasticware and cups
- At the time of the potluck, set out the food, drink, etc., on a table or tables buffet style
Where to Hold a Potluck:
- a person’s home
- a church fellowship hall
- a community center fellowship hall
- your apartment complex’s entertainment room
- the park
Advantages of Entertaining Potluck Style:
- It is less expensive than a restaurant (especially for couples and families)
- It is very informal, so usually is an easier way to get to know other people
- You have the opportunity to try new foods
- You have a chance to show off your culinary skills
- There is no waiting in a long line to be seated
Disadvantages of Entertaining With a Potluck:
- It takes more planning time for the Host and Hostess than just meeting in a restaurant
- You never know exactly what the cooking skill level will be of the participants
- Sometimes cleanup is left to just a few - but this can be fixed with a planned rotation schedule
Entertaining with a potluck is not only a great way to save money, it is also a great way to show others you care about them.
So, what are you waiting for? Start planning that potluck! Might I suggest a Chocaholic’s Theme?

I love potlucks! It’s so fun seeing everyone else brings.
I have attended potlucks ( or in the church setting–fellowship dinners) all my life. I do enjoy them. Your idea of having a dessert theme is wonderful. Lets get to the stuff we really like!!! I have sweet dreams of this already!!
