Show You Care Without Breaking the Budget: The Handmade Card
This weekend I was at my mom’s house and we were sorting through a bag of pictures and cards. It was fun seeing pictures of different family members when they were younger. Included in the pictures were some photos of my mom’s parents.
My grandma was one frugal lady. She probably could have taught Amy Dacyczyn some lessons on how to pinch a penny! One thing she will always be remembered for though is her handmade cards.
She would make them out of anything that she had on hand. Perhaps she’d cut a picture out from a church bulletin (if it hadn’t been put to use to wallpaper the outhouse yet!) Or maybe she would cut out a picture from a magazine. Then she’d attach it to a note card or even just a normal piece of paper.
Almost always there would be at least one Bible verse, and perhaps a wise saying or two, such as “A penny saved is a penny earned.” She would send these handmade cards with every letter she wrote.
Today, for Day 7 of Ways to Show You Care Without Breaking the Budget, I would like to suggest making a handmade card.
Materials:
- magazines, fliers, advertisements, etc.

- notecards or construction paper
- scissors
- glue
- writing instruments
- markers, etc.
Instructions:
Find a picture or pictures in a magazine or other source - perhaps a picture of a bird for a nature lover, or maybe a picture of a Ferrari for a car fanatic. Cut the picture(s) out and glue to the notecard or construction paper. If you wish to, decorate it with markers, etc.
Write a note telling your special someone what makes them special to you. Perhaps mention in your note why you chose the pictures for their card.
Do you remember special things your grandparents did for you?
